A LIFE-LONG ASCETIC
For some, the spiritual
disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving are never quite perfected.
For others, however, they quickly become "second nature," and a
way of life. This was certainly true for the saint depicted for today's
bulletin (above): ST. LUKE OF STIRIS. St. Luke was born on the Greek
island of Aegina at the turn of the 9th century. Even as a child, he
fasted zealously, never partaking of meat or dairy products. While others
his age entertained more frivolous pursuits, Luke developed a strict
regimen of prayer and theological study. It can be said that he embraced
the monastic life long before he was old enough to enter a monastery.
After the death of his father,
St. Luke formally began a life as a monk. He became part of a little known
monastic community at Stiris, totally immersing himself in a life of
asceticism. While he preferred the isolation of his cell, Luke soon had to
live with the fact that he had rapidly developed a reputation for being
far above his fellow monks in terms of wisdom and spirituality. Pilgrims
from all over Greece came to the humble monastery at Stiris, seeking his
counsel. Uncomfortable with is popularity, Luke nonetheless was obedient
to his superiors, who would periodically send him into the surrounding
towns and villages to teach the faithful. The fervor of his prayers are
also credited with bringing about many miraculous cures upon those to whom
he ministered.
St. Luke died in 946 A.D. and
was buried in his beloved monastery at Stiris.

Epistle
Prokeimenon. Eighth Tone. Psalm 75.11,1.
Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them.
Verse. God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel.
The reading is from Saint Paul’s Second Letter to the
Corinthians.
Chapters 6. 16-18; 7.1.
Brethren, we are the temple of the living God; as God said,
"I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their
God, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them,
and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing
unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you,
and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord
Almighty." Since we have these promises, beloved, let us
cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and
make holiness perfect in the fear of God.

Gospel
From the holy Gospel according to
St. Matthew
Chapter 15: 21-28
At that time, Jesus went to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And
behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried,
"Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely
possessed by a demon." But he did not answer her a word. And his
disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is
crying after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost
sheep of the house of Israel." But she came and knelt before him,
saying, "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is not
fair to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs."
She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall
from their master’s table." Then Jesus answered her, "O
woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire."
And her daughter was healed instantly.
