CHRISTIANS: IMITATORS OF CHRIST

It has been said that imitation is the highest form of flattery. Whether consciously or unconsciously, we have all, no doubt, patterned our lives after someone who has made a lasting impression on us. It may have been a teacher ... a priest ... an older sibling . . . perhaps even a parent. As original as we all like to portray ourselves as being, the truth of the matter is this: we are all very much like someone else!

In his First Letter to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul points out to us the One after whom we must model our lives. Be imitators of me, he proclaims, as I am of Christ. When we call ourselves Christians, we are, in effect, pledging to dedicate our lives to thinking, speaking and acting like Christ at all times. Whatever goals we may have in life are secondary to our ultimate quest: to be as Christ-like as possible. Some will tell us that this is impossible. Jesus was God, they will say, and we are mere mortals. It is sheer folly to say we can be like Him.

Yes, Jesus was God, but He was also a Man. He was human as well as divine. Christ was tempted like us. He experienced the same hardships we all endure. He was exposed to opinions and philosophies that challenged the morality of His time, just as we are. The beauty of our Lord s life is that He never wavered ... He never faltered ... He never stumbled ... He never compromised what He knew to be sacred and true. Our Lord showed us that it is not impossible to be loving and forgiving. He set the perfect example for us to follow. We have the ABILITY to walk in His footsteps and in the footsteps of the countless number of saints who have gone before us, but do we have the DESIRE? We alone can answer that question!

RESURRECTION APOLYTIKION

O faithful, let us sing a hymn of praise and worship to the Logos who is co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, who was born of the Virgin for our salvation. Of His own will, He went upon the Cross in the flesh and suffered death, to raise the dead through His glorious Resurrection.

APOLYTIKION OF THE FORERUNNER

The head of the Forerunner radiates incorruptible rays of healing upon the faithful as it rises from the earth. Heavenward, the assembly of Angels is gathered, while below the human race is called to offer glory to Christ God in unison.

O Theotokos, the mystery hidden from all ages, unknown even to the angels, has been revealed in you to all who live upon the earth. God in perfect union becomes incarnate. For our sake, He willingly endured the Cross through which He raised up the first man He had fashioned, and saved our souls from death.

APOLYTIKION OF ST. NICHOLAS

An example of the Faith and a life of humility, as a teacher of abstinence you did inspire and lead your flock and through your truthfulness of your deeds were exalted by greatness through your humility uplifting all and by poverty gaining wealth. Father and hierarch Nicholas intercede with Christ our God that our souls be saved.

EPISTLE
(II Tim. 3:10-15)

TIMOTHY, my son, you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions, my sufferings, what befell me at Antioch, at Iconion, and at Lystra, what persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

GOSPEL
From the Gospel according to St. Luke.
(Chapter 18: 10-14)

The Lord said this parable: "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank Thee that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."
