OUR HOLY FATHER DOMETIAN,
BISHOP OF MELITENE
In our Holy Orthodox Church,
there are many men and women who are revered as saints because they
accomplished great things during their lifetime. There are also those who
are honored because they did small things in a great way. One such saint
was DOMETIAN, Bishop of Melitene.
Dometian was born in the sixth
century during the reign of Emperor Justin the Younger. His wealthy
parents, Theodore and Eudocia, saw to it that he received the best
possible education, studying both secular and spiritual matters. Soon
after completing his formal studies, Dometian married, and seemed destined
for a comfortable life. Tragically, however, his wife passed away shortly
after their wedding, and Dometian's life suddenly changed forever. He
embraced the ascetic life, and at the age of 30, Dometian was chosen to be
the Bishop of Melitene in Armenia. As the Bishp of Melitene, Dometian
proved to be a kind and generous shepherd to his flock. When the Emperor
Maurice rewarded him with a great amout of gold for his assistance in
restoring King Chosroes to his rightful throne in Persia, Dometian used
all of it to build churches and care for the needy in his diocese.
While visiting Constantinople
in 602 A.D., Dometian fell asleep in the Lord. His remains were taken back
to the city of Melitene, where numerous miracles have been attributed to
them since his passing. While his life is not as widely heralded today as
some of the Church's other saints, truly his good works are know to God.

SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY
Tatania the Martyr
Resurrection Dismissal
Hymn
From the angel, the women
disciples of the Lord heard the joyful news of the Resurrection and the
repeal of the sentence imposed upon our forefathers. With pride, they said
to the Apostles, "Death is vanquished. Christ our God is risen,
bestowing upon the world His great mercy." |

Dismissal
Hymn of Epiphany
Lord, when You were baptized
in the Jordan, the veneration of the Trinity was revealed. For the voice
of the Father gave witness to You, calling You Beloved, and the Spirit,
in the guise of a dove, confirmed the certainty of His words. Glory to
You, Christ our God, who appeared and enlightened the world.

Epistle
Prokeimenon. First Tone. Psalm 32.22,1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse. Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous.
The reading is from Saint Paul’s
Letter to the Ephesians.
(Chapter 4: 7-13)
Brethren, grace was given to each of us according
to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it is said,
"When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he
gave gifts to man." (In saying, "He ascended," what
does it mean but he had also descended into the lower parts of the
earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the
heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that
some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some
pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of
ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain
to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God,
to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness
of Christ.

Gospel
The reading is from the holy Gospel
according to St. Matthew.
Chapter 4:12-17
At that time, when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he
withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in
Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that
what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
‘The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea,
across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles the people who sat in
darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region
and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began
to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at
hand."
