"LORD, TEACH US HOW TO PRAY"

When our Lord was asked by His Apostles to teach them how they should pray, He responded by giving them the "Our Father" prayer or, as it is also called, "The Lord's Prayer." Since that day, the Lord's Prayer has become the best known of all prayers. It is probably the first prayer that we learned, and it is one that we have all committed to memory at an early age.

The Lord's Prayer has been rightly referred to as a "summary of Christ's Gospel," for in its few verses, the prayer completely and concisely captures what our relationship with God should be.

OUR FATHER, WHO ART IN HEAVEN, HALLOWED BY THY NAME. It is essential for us to understand exactly Who God is. He is our Father, and as His children, we must always be obedient to Him. His Name is holy, and should never be uttered carelessly, or in vain. When approaching our Father in prayer, we must do so with awe and reverence.

THY KINGDOM COME, THY WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. When Christ was asked by Pilate if He was a King, He responded: "My kingdom is not of this world." This bold statement underscored a pivotal point of what Jesus taught throughout His ministry. He spoke frequently of the kingdom of heaven, promising a place in it for all those who believe in Him. In the Lord's Prayer, we affirm our desire to see the fulfillment of that kingdom come to pass, according to God's will.

GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD. As God's children, we must realize that we depend upon Him totally. He knows our constant needs, and only He can sustain us. As we read in the Letter of St. James: "Every good gift and every perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights." (James 1:17)

FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES, AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US. We are all sinners. and we continually seek the forgiveness of our Father. This petition reminds us, however, that we have the obligation to be forgiving as well, for "If you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive you your trespasses." (Matt. 6:15)

AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION, BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL. Living a Christian life is not easy. Evil truly exists in the world, and there are many other paths to follow. It is necessary for us to constantly ask our Father to keep us on the road that will bring us to salvation. St. Paul reassures us that "God is faithful, Who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able to bear." (1 Cor 10:13)

In its brevity, the Lord's Prayer highlights all of our spiritual needs. In its simplicity, it expresses the profound essence of our Faith. Is it any wonder, then, that the Lord's Prayer is called the "perfect prayer," given to us by the "Perfect Man?"

Makarios of Egypt

Resurrection Dismissal Hymn

O faithful, let us sing a hymn of praise and worship to the Logos who is co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, who was born of the Virgin for our salvation. Of His own will, He went upon the Cross in the flesh and suffered death, to raise the dead through His glorious Resurrection.

O our God-bearing Father Makarios, you proved yourself, a citizen of the desert, an angel in the flesh and a wonder worker. Having received heavenly gifts through fasting, vigils and prayer, you heal the sick and the souls of those who in faith, turn to you. Glory to Him who gave you power, glory to Him who crowed you, glory to Him, who through you, heals all.

An example of the Faith and a life of humility, as a teacher of abstinence you did inspire and lead your flock and through your truthfulness of your deeds were exalted by greatness through your humility uplifting all and by poverty gaining wealth. Epistle
Prokeimenon. Fourth Tone. Psalm 103.24,1
O Lord, how magnificent are your works.
You have made all things in wisdom.
Verse. Bless the Lord, O my soul.
The reading is from Saint Paul’s
Letter to the Colossians. (Chapter 3. 4-11).

Brethren, When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience. In these you once walked, when you lived in them. But now put them all away; anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices and have put on the new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free man, but Christ is all, and in all.

Gospel
The reading is from the holy Gospel
according to St. Luke.
Chapter 17:12-19

At that time, as Jesus entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." When he saw them he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus, "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner? And he said to him, "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well."
