MAXIMOS: A TRUE DEFENDER OF THE FAITH

On our ecclesiastical calendar, certain saints are designated as "confessors," in recognition of their staunch and fearless defense of the dogmas and doctrines of the Holy Orthodox Church. One such man will always be known to us as "MAXIMOS THE CONFESSOR." Maximos lived in Constantinople in the 7th century.

Born into a noble family, he quickly ascended to the lofty position of chief secretary to
the Emperor Heraclius. Eventually, Maximos realized that his loyalties really were with another "Master" --Jesus Christ. Resigning from his duties in the imperial court, he entered a monastery, and soon became its abbot. The Church that Maximos chose to serve was shrouded in controversy, as the heresy of Monothelitism threatened to shatter a doctrine that had existed for centuries. The Monothelites taught that Christ did not possess a human will, only a divine one. Even the Emperor and the Patriarch fell victim to this heresy!

Maximos devoted the rest of his life to defending the true position of the Church on this important matter. He wrote several treatises denouncing Monothelitism. Taking his crusade a step farther, Maximos traveled to other Christian centers, where he was able to gather support for the proper position on Christ's two wills. While personally enduring persecution for speaking out against the Emperor and Patriarch -- he was ultimately banished from the Empire for the remainder of his life - Maximos was vindicated when the Sixth Ecumenical Council of 680 A.D. condemned Monothelitism. Though he did not live to enjoy his victory, Maximos will forever be remembered for his untir able efforts in defense of the truth.

EPISTLE
Venerable Father Euthymios

2 Corinthians 4: 6-15

Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.

Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believed, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

GOSPEL
From the Gospel according to St. Luke
Chapter 17:12-19

At that time, as Jesus entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." When he saw them he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. The one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus, "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner? And he said to him, "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well."
