THE HOLY PROPHET ELIAS . . .

He is called "the man of God" in the Scriptures, and is surely one of the greatest Prophets of the Old Testament. A man of asceticism, of fiery zeal for faith in the one, true God; a man who feared no king but the Lord of glory. One thinks of fire when this man comes to mind — the fire of his own that burned in his soul for God, the fire that he called down from heaven on several occasions, and the fire that finally bore him alive to heaven in a chariot propelled by fire.

This is the Holy Prophet Elias (Elijah in Hebrew). He occupies a unique and popular place in the iconography and veneration of the Church. The icon of our bulletin depicts the Prophet hiding in the wilderness, miraculously fed by a raven. The story tells of his appearance before wicked King Ahab, condemning him for his sins, and telling him of a coming famine in the land. The prophet, sensing his life would be in danger, went at the inspiration of the Lord into the wilderness, and hid there at a brook near the Jordan. Here ravens came, morning and evening, bringing him bread and food.

The dimensions of this event are enhanced by St. Basil the Great, saying: "The ravens, whose custom was to steal food from others, became servants at his table. At the command of the Lord, they changed their nature and became faithful guardians of bread and meat..." So this incident is a prefigure of the transformation that comes with the kingdom of Christ in the New Testament. (The Prophet Elias lived about 850 years before the birth of our Lord). In the hymns of the Church, he is called the "second forerunner" of the "coming of Christ."

EPISTLE
(Roman 15: 1-7)

Brethren, we who are strong ought to bear with the feelings of the weak, and not to please ourselves; let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to edify him. For Christ did not please himself; but as it written, "The reproaches for those who reproached thee fell on me." For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

GOSPEL
From the Gospel according to St. Matthew
(Chapter 9: 27-35)

At that time, as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you." And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, "See that no one knows it." But they went away, and spread his fame through all the district.

As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel." But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons."

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity among people.
