"LET YOUR HOLY
SPIRIT COME UPON US, O LORD"
Today, our Holy Orthodox
Church observes the great Feast of Pentecost. We commemorate the Descent
of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles in Jerusalem some 50 days after
Christ's Resurrection. This was the fulfillment of the Lord's promise to
His Apostles: "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you
another Helper, that He may abide with you forever — the Spirit of truth
— Whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees Him nor knows
Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you." (John
14:16-17)
The first Christian Pentecost
was a dramatic day, as documented in the Book
of Acts. The Apostles were gathered in the same Upper Room where the
Mystical Supper had taken place. Suddenly, the room was filled with a
rushing wind, and tongues of fire appeared over the heads of the Apostles.
Fortified by the power of the Holy Spirit, they ran out into the streets
of Jerusalem, speaking about the wonderful works of God. The ancient city
was crowded with visitors, who had come to observe the Hebrew festival of
the first-fruits of harvest. Amazingly, the Apostles were able to speak to
the multitude of foreigners in their own native languages! Yes, the same
God Who confused the tongues at the construction of the Tower of Babel now
made His Message known to everyone!
Pentecost is viewed as the
"birthday" of the Church, for on this day, some 3,000 people
were compelled to be baptized after hearing the Apostle Peter convincingly
preach that the crucified Jesus was truly the Risen Messiah.

Special Message for the day...
on Pentecost
"The story of Pentecost invites us to reflect upon our openness and our response to the outpouring of the Spirit in our times."
We should pray: God our Father, let this day of Pentecost be an outpouring of Your Spirit to us all, that we may be a shining light amidst the darkness of the world. Amen.
