THE SUNDAY OF ALL SAINTS

Each year, our Holy Orthodox Church designates the Sunday following the great Feast of Pentecost as the "Sunday of All Saints." On this day, we remember, not only those whose pious examples are well-documented, but the countless others throughout the course of the history of the Christian Church whose spiritual accomplishments are known only by God.

There is a tendency for us to look upon sainthood as an impossible goal for us to achieve. We stand in awe of the saintly examples set by men and women such as St. Nicholas, St. Paul, St. Peter, St. Mary of Egypt and others too numerous to mention. We view our own spiritual inadequacies and our lack of Christian zeal and sadly lament that "...we could NEVER be a Saint!"

Nothing could be further from the truth! In fact, we are all called by Christ to be numbered among His Saints! The Saints were human beings, too. They faced temptation. They experienced the same desires and had the same needs that consume all of us. What set the Saints apart from everyone else was their ability to be faithful to their baptismal promise — a promise we all make — to LOVE and SERVE Jesus Christ. The Saints knew the necessity of being willing to sacrifice everything for their Savior — even their very lives.

May we all strive to be numbered with God's Saints one day. Truly, we must heed the words we hear at every Divine Liturgy: LET US COMMEND OURSELVES AND ONE ANOTHER AND OUR WHOLE LIFE TO CHRIST OUR GOD. If we do this, sainthood will be ours!

Special Message for the day...

"All Saints’ Sunday gives us a glimpse into our own glorious future, our eternal destiny which has to be worked out in love and service here on earth. As we honour the vast army of God's friends, in the same breath we ask God's favour, that where they are now, we, too, may be in the future. We pray that one day this will be our feast as well."

RESURRECTION APOLYTIKION

O Merciful One, You came from on high, and condescended to Your three-day burial to save us from passions. You are our life and our Resurrection. Glory to You.

APOLYTIKION OF THE FEAST DAY

Your Church, O Christ our God, clothed itself in the blood of Your martyrs from throughout the world, as though it were a robe of linen and purple; through them, she cries out to You, "Send down upon Your people compassion, grant peace to Your commonwealth and, to our souls, great mercy."
