"LET US SET OUT WITH
JOY UPON THE SEASON OF THE FAST . . ."
This morning, the entire
Orthodox world stands at the doorstep of another season of Great Lent. For
four Sundays, the Church has attempted to prepare us for this moment with
the special lessons attached to these Pre-Lenten Sundays. We have seen the
need for humility in our lives through the Parable of the Publican and the
Pharisee. Through the Parable of the Prodigal Son, we have recognized the
inexhaustible capacity for love and mercy that our Heavenly Father has for
ALL of His children, always willing to take us back, no matter how far we
stray. Last Sunday, we were also reminded that God will be a Just Judge
through Christ's vivid depiction of the Last Judgment. On this final
Sunday before the Great Fast, we are exhorted to forgive one another while
prayer and fasting are placed before us as a reminder of what the next 40
days are really about.
In the days that lie ahead, we
are all asked to make a sincere attempt at changing our lives, showing
that we are truly worthy of the great sacrifice our Lord made for us, and
for the sake of our salvation, when he died upon the Cross. Although this
is certainly a solemn and somber time on our Church Calendar, the hymns of
our Holy Orthodox Church point out to us that it is also a period of
spiritual joy. Indeed, one of the sticheras from this evening's Vespers
beautifully maps out for us what our Lenten attitude must be: "LET US
SET OUT WITH JOY UPON THE SEASON OF THE FAST, AND PREPARE OURSELVES FOR
SPIRITUAL COMBAT. LET US PURIFY OUR SOUL AND CLEANSE OUR FLESH. AS WE FAST
FROM FOOD, LET US ALSO ABSTAIN FROM EVERY PASSION, SO THAT WE MAY BE
COUNTED WORTHY TO SEE THE PASSION OF CHRIST AND, WITH GREAT SPIRITUAL
GLADNESS, BEHOLD HIS HOLY PASSOVER.

Hymn
The women disciples of the Lord
heard from the angel, the joyful news of the Resurrection and the repeal of
the sentence imposed upon our forefathers. With pride they said to the

At the very sound of Gabriel’s
voice bringing you that greeting, O Virgin, the Lord of All became
incarnate in you. As David the Just had foretold, you became a Holy

Glory to Him who came forth from you. Glory to Him who set us free,
being born of you.

Epistle
Prokeimenon. Eighth Tone. Psalm 11.7,1.
You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us.
Verse. Save me, O Lord, for there is no longer any that is godly.
The reading is from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews.
Chapter 12.1-10.
Brethren, since we are surrounded by so great a
cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin
which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race
that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter
of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the
cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the
throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such
hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or
fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet
resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you
forgotten the exhortation which addresses you as sons? "My
son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose
courage when you are punished by him. For the Lord disciplines him
whom he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives." It
is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as
sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
If you are left without discipline, in which all have
participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.
Besides this, we have had earthly fathers to discipline us and we
respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of
spirits and live? For they discipline us for a short time at their
pleasure, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share
his holiness.

Gospel
From the Gospel according to St. Mathew
Chapter 6: 14-21
The Lord said: "If you forgive men their
trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do
not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive
your trespasses.
"And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the
hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be
seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you
fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not
be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father
who sees in secret will reward you.
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but
lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust
consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your
treasure is, there will your heart be also."
