KNOWING THE "UNKNOWN GOD"

When the Apostle Paul arrived in Athens on one of his missionary journeys, he discovered a  pagan altar with this inscription: "TO THE UNKNOWN GOD." While most of his preaching concerning the Risen Christ fell upon deaf ears in this center of learning in the ancient world, Paul's message touched the heart of a young man named Dionysios. Dionysios is commonly referred to as the "Areopagite," denoting that he was a member of the Athenian Senate. When St. Paul asked him who this "unknown god" was that he worshiped. Dionysios replied: "He is the One among the gods Who has not yet manifested Himself. He will reign over heaven and earth, and His kingdom will have no end." The Apostle realized that, incredibly, Dionysios was expressing a belief in Jesus Christ!

With great care, Paul explained to his new disciple the truths of the early Church: that God became Incarnate, dwelt among men, was crucified for us and, finally, rose from the dead. Filled with the grace of God, Dionysios and his entire family were baptized by St. Paul. God was no longer "unknown" to him!

While initially remaining in Athens and concentrating his efforts in establishing the Church there, Dionysios eventually embarked on missionary labors of his own. He made several visits to Jerusalem, where he was privileged to meet the Theotokos and several of the Apostles. He was even present for the Falling Asleep of the Mother of God. Dionysios suffered martyrdom in the region of Gaul, being beheaded there in 95 A.D.

EPISTLE
(2 Corinthians 9: 6-11)

Brethren, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.

GOSPEL
From the Gospel according to St. Luke
(Chapter 7: 11-16)

At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her.

When the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man set up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"
