"TABITHA
ARISE!"
When we think of miraculous
healings, it is understandable that the famous works of our Lord would
come to our mind. You may be surprised to learn that instances of the
Apostles doing such deeds in the early Church -- always done in the name
of Christ -- are well-documented in the Book of Acts. Perhaps the most
famous miracle performed by one of the Apostles was the raising of Tabitha
from the dead by the Apostle Peter.
This miracle took place in the
town of Joppa, a seaport city some 35 miles northwest of Jerusalem. Living
in Joppa was a beloved woman disciple of the Lord named Tabith (also
referred to as "Dorcas"). She was said to have been a kind and
caring person, whose good works were known throughout the Christian
community in Joppa and its neighboring towns. When Tabitha suddenly became
ill and died, her distraught friends sent word to Peter, who was in Lydda
some 10 miles away. Peter came to Joppa and went immediately to Tabitha's
house. In a scene reminiscent of our Lord bringing the daughter of Jairus
back to life, Peter came before the body of the newly departed and cried
out: "Tabitha, arise!" The Book of Acts tells us that she
immediately opened her eyes and sat up! Peter
and the other Apostles were very clear about the miracles that they
worked: it was merely the power of God working through them. They were
only the instrument through which God was revealing His power. Because of
the raising of Tabitha and other similar miraculous deeds, many new
followers of Christ were brought into the Church.

SEVENTH SUNDAY OF LUKE
Nestor the Great Martyr
Resurrection Dismissal
Hymn
Savior, Your tomb was sealed by
the Jews with a stone. Soldiers kept watch over Your sacred body. Yet, You
rose on the third day, giving life to the world. Wherefore the powers of
heaven cried out, to You, O Giver of Life, "Glory to Your Resurrection,
O Christ; glory to Your Kingdom, glory to Your dispensation, who alone are
the loving One." |

Hymn of the Saint
The world has found in you a
great champion in time of peril, as you emerged the victor in routing
the barbarians. For as you brought to naught the boasts of Lyaios,
imparting courage to Nestor in the stadium, in like manner, holy One,
great Martyr Nestor, invoke Christ God for us, that He may grant us His
great mercy.

Epistle
Prokeimenon. First Tone. Psalm 32.22, 1.
Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.
Verse. Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous.
The reading is from Saint Paul’s
Second Letter to the Corinthians
Chapter 9: 6-11
Brethren, he who sows sparingly will also reap
sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or
under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able
to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may
always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for
every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he
gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He
who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and
multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your
righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for great
generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.

Gospel
From the Gospel according to St. Luke
Chapter 8: 27-39
At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a
ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus’ feet he besought him
to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years
of age, and she was dying.
As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a
flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon
physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and
touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood
ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When
all denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, "Master,
the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said,
"Someone touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth
from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she
came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence
of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been
immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has
made you well; go in peace."
While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler’s house came
and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any
more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear;
only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the
house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John
and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were
weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is
not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she
was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child
arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he
directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents
were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.
