PREVENTING THE "GOLDEN YEARS" FROM TARNISHING
Most of us have a somewhat distorted and highly contradictory view of the aging process. We all eagerly look forward to "growing up," yet seemingly no one wants to "grow old!" Unfortunately, we cannot avoid
this step in the natural progression of life -- there is no "fountain of youth" to
be found!
Those who have reached this level of maturity sometimes see their longevity as a curse rather than a blessing. 'The 'golden years' are hardly golden," they lament. Yes, old age is often equated with a loss of productivity and usefulness. Sadly, the elderly are often perceived as a "burden" on society.
We are fortunate that God doesn't share these sentiments! Look at the significant accomplishments of those who were advanced in years that we read about in the Bible. Abraham... Moses... Noah... Simeon... Joseph. There is an endless list of "scriptural senior citizens" who made amazing contributions to God's divine plan for mankind. Moreover, in ancient Israel and in the early Christian Church, the elders were held in highest esteem and were sought out frequently for their wise counsel.
In today's world as well, we too must draw from the wealth of wisdom possessed by our older generation. To use a modern expression, they have "been there and done that!" Their experience in life can be invaluable to us. There is still much for our "golden agers" to do for God and His Church. May we always give them the opportunity to do so, affording them the same respect that our Lord showed His earthly parents as they grew older.

SECOND SUNDAY OF LUKE
The Venerable Kyriakos
Resurrection Dismissal
Hymn
O faithful, let us sing a hymn
of praise and worship to the Logos who is co-eternal with the Father and the
Spirit, who was born of the Virgin for our salvation. Of His own will, He
went upon the Cross in the flesh and suffered death, to raise the dead
through His glorious Resurrection. |

Dismissal
Hymn of Venerable Kuriakos
O our God-bearing Father
Kyriakos, you proved yourself, a citizen of the desert, an angel in the
flesh and a wonder worker. Having received heavenly gifts through
fasting, vigils and prayer, you heal the sick and the soul of those who
in faith, turn to you. Glory to Him who gave you power, glory to Him who
crowned you, glory to Him, who through you, heals all.

Theotokion
At the very sound of Gabriel’s
voice bringing you that greeting, O Virgin, the Lord of all became
incarnate in you.As David the Just had foretold, you became a Holy
Tabernacle. You became greater than the heavens by bearing your Creator.
Glory to Him who came forth from you. Glory to Him, who set us free,
being born from you.

Champion of Christians
not put to shame, advocate before the Maker always steadfast, do
not spurn sinners’ voices raised in prayer. In your goodness
respond to bring help to us who devoutly petition you. Hasten your
intercession and urgently make entreaty; for you unfailingly
defend, Theotokos, those who honor you.

Epistle
Prokeimenon. Fifth Tone. Psalm 11.7,1.
You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us.
Verse. Save me, O Lord, for the godly man
has failed
The reading is from Saint Paul’s Second Letter
to the Corinthians.
Chapters 1. 21-21; 2. 1-4.
BRETHREN, it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and
has commissioned us; he has put his seal upon us and given us his
Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
But I call God to witness against me – it was to spare you
that I refrained from coming to Corinth. Not that we lord it over
your faith; we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in
your faith. For I made up my mind not to make you another painful
visit. For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but
the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I
came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me
rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the
joy of you all. For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish
of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you
know the abundant love that I have for you.

Gospel
From the Gospel according to St. Luke
Chapter 6: 31-36
The Lord said: "As you wish that men would do to
you, do so to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is
that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do
good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even
sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to
receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to
receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend,
expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you
will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and
the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
