EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM UPDATE – Thursday, October 26, 2006
Dear Fellow
Parishioners, Parents and Students,
We are pleased
to inform you of the following developments in our efforts to meet
current and emerging educational needs in our parish:
A] GREEK
LANGUAGE TOTAL IMMERSION PROGRAM (GLTIP)
1] As a key
complement to the Hellenic School educational offerings, the
Immersion Program is designed to help students who can speak and
understand the Greek language. Initially, the program will offer
the following two levels of classes which are open to qualified
students regardless of current enrollment in the Hellenic School:
-
Level
2 for 6-8 years of age
-
Level
3 for 9-12 years of age
2] To maximize
the learning potential of the students, there will be 4 hours of
class work per week, over a two day period. Three hours will be
dedicated to language skills and one hour will be dedicated to
cultural education. Currently, the classes are proposed for Thursday
and Friday of each week. The classes would begin at 4:30 pm and end
at 6:30 pm
3] On
Sunday, November 5,
please join us in an
informational meeting to learn
more about the Immersion Program. The meeting will be held at the
Church Hall at 12.30 pm following the Divine Liturgy.
4] On
Thursday and Friday, November 9 and 10 (4.30 pm – 6.30 pm),
please bring your child or children to Classroom 10 on either one of
these dates for a brief test that will be used to determine the
student’s level of proficiency and placement to the appropriate
classes in the Immersion Program.
5]
Classes for the Immersion Program will start on Thursday, November
16, 2006 at 4.30 pm.
B] GREEK
FOR NON-GREEK SPEAKERS PROGRAM (GNGS)
In response to encouraging feedback that we have received from
many parishioners, we are currently in the process of developing
classes for children and teenagers who do not speak Greek at all. In
addition, we are enhancing the existing Adult Class with extensive
conversational and fluency development skills. Additional
information regarding these initiatives will be forthcoming.
In Christ, and on behalf of the Greek Language Immersion Program
Organizing Committee and the Hellenic School Council,
Peter Nanopoulos
